Costs related to the maintenance of a boat
You may have heard it before, they say that the cost of a boat over a year is about 10% of the price of this boat. This is not quite true as it is a pretty broad estimate. If you do it right, you can considerably reduce your costs.
However, it is the part of boat maintenance that is the most expensive. Obviously, it depends on several factors such as the type of boat, the brand, the year, the model and the size. For example, a 10-meter boat will be less expensive to maintain than a 20-meter boat, which is logical !
For this article, let's take as a reference, a boat of 11 meters with a double inboard motorization of 300 HP.
The costs also vary depending on the type of boater you are and your frequency of use of the boat. Indeed, the more you use your boat, the more the hull wears and requires a refit and antifouling. In this case, you can count an all-inclusive price that goes up to 1000 euros.
Then comes the price of the engine overhaul. The price depends on the type of engine (inboard or outboard) and the length of time the boat is used (on the logbook). You can count up to 800 euros.
Finally, there are the expenses on the equipment on board. It is mandatory to have up-to-date safety equipment. For example, you will have to check the expiration date and replace if necessary the distress flares or the life jackets.
Also note that according to the list of all mandatory equipment on board (Division 240), it is mandatory for boaters sailing more than 6 miles from a shelter, to be equipped with a life raft. The cost of a raft oscillates between 1000 and 2000 euros. The control, every 3 years, can cost up to 500 euros.
Other costs (not related to the cost of boat maintenance)
Let's start with an obvious one : fuel. Its price depends mainly on the characteristics of your boat - its weight, size, engine, consumption - and the type of fuel. Beware : your attitude plays an important role, since it influences consumption. If you often travel at full power, you're going to have to fill up quite frequently.
There are costs associated with your berth. They vary depending on your location, the size of your boat, whether you are in port or at anchor, afloat or dry... It's a good idea to plan for dry winterization if you only use your boat during the summer seasons, or to purchase an annual harbor pass if you use your vessel more frequently.
The price of mooring can quickly increase depending on your parking area and the port. Generally the prices are higher in the South of France, especially in the Alpes-Maritimes. In Cannes for example, the cost can represent up to 8000 euros per year.
Finally, it is mandatory to subscribe to a liability insurance. The price of this one depends on several factors such as the navigation area, the type of coverage, the different responsibilities. The price of a comprehensive insurance can represent up to 2000 euros.
